If you’re currently in therapy and are thinking about what you can do outside of your sessions to continue working towards your goals, check out these questions for reflection after your therapy sessions.
What was the main theme of the session?
What sensations/feelings did you notice during the session?
Was there anything that you didn’t get to say, and, why do you think you were not able to share it?
Did you feel your therapist understood you? If not, why not?
Are there any actions that you can take between now and your next session towards your goal?
Did you notice any resistance or reluctance within yourself?
While a lot of work can get done within the therapeutic hour, reflecting outside of your session can be really important for your progress. It can also help you to prepare for your next session. It can sometimes be challenging to think about what to talk about in session and also to remember what you talked about previously.
I would especially encourage clients to reflect on how you feel your therapy sessions are going. Feedback is vital to the effectiveness of therapy because it allows you to address any issues that may be preventing progress and it can be helpful to adjust the goals and expectations going forward. Therapists are not mind readers (despite some misconceptions) so it is important to tell your therapist how you feel. This is one of many reasons why I would recommend taking time to reflect after your therapy sessions.
I hope some of these questions might help you to reflect on your therapy sessions. And if you haven’t started your therapy journey yet, feel free to keep these questions handy for the future. If you’d like to start therapy work with me, please contact me using the link below.
