FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS COUNSELLING/PSYCHOTHERAPY?
"We use the word 'therapy' to cover talking therapies, such as counselling, psychotherapy and coaching. Therapy offers a safe, confidential place to talk to a trained professional about your feelings and concerns. You might talk about difficult events in your life or your relationships and emotions. Or you might have thoughts and behaviours you want to change.
Therapists will not give you advice or solve your problems for you. They will listen to your story, helping you to understand yourself better and make positive changes in your life." - BACP
WHAT ARE YOUR FEES?
I charge ¥18,000 / £100 for a standard 50-minute in-person, video, email, or chat session.
However, I do offer a sliding scale depending on individual circumstances. Please contact me for more details.
If you have TRICARE insurance, sessions are charged at ¥22,000 and there is an additional admin fee of ¥2,000. Please ensure to check with TRICARE directly about your insurance plan and your coverage.
If you want to have a consultation to discuss working together before committing to a full 50-minute session, then I offer a free initial 15-minute telehealth appointment (via video, chat or phone).
DO YOU OFFER REDUCED RATES?
Yes, I am able to accommodate a reduced fee for students (over 18 years). Additionally, if you are on low income or under financial hardship then I can negotiate a reduced fee.
Please note that I may ask to see documentation to support the reduced fee. For example, a student ID or letter from your school/university. In that case, I will use a secure email service to receive this information from you and once I have confirmed the evidence for a reduced rate I will immediately delete the data.
HOW CAN I PAY FOR SESSIONS?
For clients in Japan:
Fees will be payable to Herald Square Psychology or Yokohama Counseling Office depending on whether you were referred. If you contact me directly through my website, then fees will be payable via PayPal.
For clients outside of Japan:
Sessions are payable via PayPal.
Sessions will need to be paid for in advance of the appointment unless otherwise agreed. Failure to pay for sessions will result in cancellation.
Please note that using PayPal as a payment option you are agreeing to PayPal's privacy policy and you will need to check their website directly to understand how they store your information.
CAN I GET A REFUND IF THERE ARE TECHNICAL ISSUES?
Unfortunately, if the session has already begun I cannot offer a refund.
However, depending on the type of issue, I can negotiate on a case-by-case basis for a make-up session.
WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION/MISSED APPOINTMENT POLICY?
I understand that life is unpredictable and there may be times when you wish to cancel a scheduled session. Additionally, committing to regular therapy can be a challenge at times. For this reason, it is important for us to openly communicate to prevent any unnecessary charges for late canceled or missed appointments. This policy below is in place as I believe the therapist's and client's time and resources are valuable and it is vital that we both respect the rules for engaging in the therapeutic process.
-
Cancellations should be made with at least 24 hours’ notice. Clients who fail to cancel appointments with sufficient notice will be required to pay the full amount for the session and it will not be possible to offer a refund.
-
If there are any outstanding payments for appointments, then I will not be able to book future sessions until the fee is paid.
-
In an emergency situation, where I may have to cancel a session suddenly (due to illness for example), I will not charge for the scheduled session or give a refund if the session has already been paid. I will reschedule the appointment at your earliest convenience and may be able to offer times outside of the usual hours to accommodate for any inconvenience caused.
-
Frequent cancellations (even within the cancellation policy) or missed appointments may result in the termination of therapy.
Please note that I am not able to make exceptions for the cancellation/missed appointment policy and it applies to all clients and all confirmed sessions. I appreciate your understanding.
DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE?
Unfortunately, therapy is not covered by Japanese National Health Insurance and sessions will need to be paid out-of-pocket.
If you have TRICARE Insurance I am able to work with you via Yokohama Counseling Office. Please ensure to get a referral before contacting us. Once you are approved for sessions with us then you can request to work with me.
If you have private insurance and want to claim retrospectively, please consult with your insurer about the requirements for coverage. If you need supporting evidence beyond invoices then please consult with me via email before booking a session. I cannot guarantee that I will be able to provide the evidence required by your insurer and will need to see any forms in advance.
WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?
For clients based in Japan, I am able to work with you in-person via collaboration with Herald Square Psychology (Shibuya, Tokyo). Please contact HSP and request to work with me. Although, please kindly note that I have limitations on in-person sessions due the office space being shared and the space is not suitable for sessions with young people. I am able to work online through HSP, YCO and ME Therapy. You can submit an enquiry here if you'd like to know more.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ONLINE COUNSELLING?
There are many benefits to online counselling.
1. It is convenient and accessible. You can stay in the comfort of your own home and have a session at a time that suits you.
2. Online counselling still provides the benefits of the therapeutic process.
3. There are many ways to communicate online. I offer video, email, and chat services. I believe this allows anyone to have access to therapy via a medium that might suit them best.
WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF ONLINE COUNSELLING?
Compared to in-person counselling there can be limitations.
1. The use of technology is a large factor and there can be technical difficulties during sessions. It is vital that we are patient and communicate when these issues occur.
2. There are cues, such as body language, that can be difficult to ascertain through video. This can pose some challenges. However, therapy is talking-based and, whether spoken or written, language is an important factor. Therefore, I believe these challenges can be easily overcome through communication.
3. Due to the anonymity of some online counselling formats, such as email or chat, it may allow us to get deeper into the heart of things more quickly. This is known as the online disinhibition effect. There is certainly a benefit to this factor but it can also be quite overwhelming as you may discuss topics that are incredibly difficult for you. It is important to consider if you are ready before starting therapy.
WHAT LANGUAGES DO YOU OFFER?
I am a native English speaker and I am only able to offer therapy in English.
Whilst I live and work in Japan, I am not able to provide therapy in Japanese. I do have a conversational understanding of Japanese but I am not a native or fluent speaker. Language is a key part of therapy so if you require Japanese language then I would recommend seeking services elsewhere. My colleagues at Yokohama Counseling Office may be able to assist you.
DO YOU ACCEPT CLIENTS OUTSIDE OF JAPAN AND THE UK?
It is possible for me to work with you if you are outside of Japan or the UK. However, it is dependent on the regulations for counselling in the country in which you are residing.
If you are in crisis or struggling with suicidal ideation or self-harm to a severe degree then it is my professional opinion that seeking support in your local area would be best. If I deem that it would be unsafe for us to work together then I will let you know as soon as possible.
CAN YOU HELP ME IF I AM IN A CRISIS?
While I do my best to support anyone seeking mental health services, I am not an emergency resource and would encourage you to contact services that are better equipped to handle a crisis. Please consider contacting your local GP, emergency room, or psychiatric service.
Here are some resources you may find useful if you are in a crisis:
